Vegan and gluten-free edibles in NYC

Most edibles were not made with dietary needs in mind. Milk chocolate, gelatin gummies, flour-based treats, and soy lecithin are everywhere. If you eat vegan or live with allergies, here is what to check, and how our Brooklyn lineup was built around exactly these concerns.

Why so many edibles are not vegan

Gummies usually rely on gelatin, which comes from animals. Chocolates are often milk chocolate, and even many bars sold as dark still contain milk or dairy solids. Baked edibles bring butter and flour. A cannabis product being plant-based does not make the edible vegan.

What to check on any label

Before buying edibles anywhere in the city, look for:

  • Milk, milk solids, butter, or whey
  • Gelatin in gummies, chews, and roll-ups
  • Wheat flour or other gluten ingredients
  • Soy lecithin, a common emulsifier in chocolate
  • Nuts, or a note about shared nut processing
  • How the cannabis was extracted

How our chocolates measure up

Every Edge Off chocolate is dark chocolate with no milk or dairy solids and no gelatin, made with sunflower lecithin instead of soy. Our co-founder Lev is allergic to gluten and soy, so everything we make is gluten-free, soy-free, and nut-free. The full story is on our About page.

Extraction matters too

Clean ingredients mean little if the cannabis was extracted with harsh solvents. Our method uses no butane, no CO2 oil, and no ethanol. Lev developed it in his own kitchen and achieved homogeneity, which is what makes consistent dosing possible. Read more in our vegan chocolate guide.

Consistent, divisible dosing

Every bar is made in the same mold and divides into four, so a quarter bar is a consistent portion. The five strengths each have their own color: red 5 mg, gold 15 mg, green 30 mg, blue 50 mg, and black 100 mg. New to edibles? Start with our first-timer's guide.

A sugar-free option: tinctures

If you also avoid sugar, our tinctures are made with avocado oil, with no hydrogenation and no sugar. They work in smoothies, salad, or pasta, so you can dose your own meals. See tinctures vs. edibles.
